Whatever Became Of: The Grass Roots

The Grass Roots was a band from the mid 60's. Their early history is complicated due to several formations and breakups. They began in 1965 when Dunhill records asked two songwriters/producers to write some folk-rock songs, which became vogue in the mid sixties thanks to writers like Bob Dylan and bands like Peter, Paul and Mary. Dunhill wanted to cash in on that market. The two song writers were P. F. Sloan and Steve Barri. They wrote, and recorded, a demo record that was distributed to radio stations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The demo showed some minor success. Sloan and Barri decided to find an existing band and make them the Grass Roots. After two bands that came and went, the Grass Roots finally solidified in 1966. The members were Creed Bratton, Rick Coonce, Warren Entner , and Rob Grill. Bratton, Coonce and Entner came from a band called The 13th Floor.

The band had 14 top 40 hits including "Let's Live for Today", "Midnight Confessions", "Temptation Eyes" and "Two Divided by Love." The band had 7 gold singles and 1 platinum single.

The band toured in later years on the oldies circuit. Lead singer Rob Grill passed away in 2011.
