The Quadrantids Meteor Shower

The Quadrantid meteor shower is one of the best meteor showers of the year. It usually gives us more than 100 meteors per hour.

This year, the Quadrantid Meteor Shower will begin around December 28th and will continue through January 7th. You will want to start observing at about 8:00pm EST or 5:00 PST on the evening of January 3rd for North American observers. This coincides with the new moon of January so moonlight will not interfere at any hour of the night.

Unfortunately at this time the Quadrantid radiant lies low in the northwestern sky for observers in North America. Rates would only be a small fraction of what could be seen with the radiant high in the sky. This timing is best suited for Eastern Europe and Central Asia where the radiant is favorably placed high in the sky during the morning hours. Even under ideal circumstances this display is quite variable. Observers should witness 30-50 shower members per hour at maximum but occasionally these rates can exceed 100 Quadrantids per hour from rural locations. Best viewing times are about an hour before dawn on the mornings of the 3rd and 4th.

Mama Took My Kodachrome Away

After 75 years, Kodachrome film will be no more. This afternoon, the last Kodachrome processing lab in the world, located in Kansas, stopped accepting rolls to be developed.

Paul Simon said it all in his song "Kodachrome":

Kodachrome
You give us those nice bright colors
You give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah!
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

I'll miss you Kodachrome. Since 1965 you have bestowed upon me beautiful prints in magnificent color. But, like the push-button phone, Polaroid instant images and the cassette tape, you have been put to death by advancements in technology. The guilty party that sent you to your grave - the digital camera.
Goodbye, old friend. Paul Simon and I shall miss you.

Gone Before Their Time - Jim Morrison

This is the sixth in a series of articles memorializing musicians who died before their time:

James Douglas Morrison, known as Jim Morrison, was born December 8, 1943. He was the lead singer of the band The Doors.
Jim was born in Melbourne, Florida. His father, George Morrison, was an admiral in the U.S. Navy. His mother was Clara Morrison. Jim had a sister who was born in 1947 and a brother who was born in 1948.

Jim attended St. Petersburg Junior College in Florida and then went on to Florida State University. In 1964 he attended UCLA. He earned an undergraduate degree at UCLA's film school and the Theater Arts department of the College of Fine Arts in 1965.

After graduating from college, Morrison and UCLA student Ray Manzarek became the first two members of The Doors. Not long after, drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger joined the band. The band took their name from the title of Aldous Huxley's  novel "The Doors of Perception."

Morrison wrote many of the songs for the band. He also co-wrote with fellow band member Robby Krieger. The two of them penned such hits as "Light My Fire", "Love Me Two Times", "Love Her Madly" and "Touch Me".

Many people believe Jim Morrison and Van Morrison are siblings. They are not. However, one night at the famous Whiskey a Go Go, Jim Morrison and the Doors teamed with Van Morrison and his band Them for a live rendition of Van's hit "Gloria."

The Doors went on to play for the Ed Sullivan Show. Sullivan wanted the band yo perform "People Are Strange" and "Light My Fire". Censors requested the band change the lyrics in "Light My Fire" from "Girl we couldn't get much higher" to "Girl we couldn't get much better"; changing what was obviously a reference to drugs in the original lyrics. After assuring to Sullivan that he'd make the change, he defied the censors by singing the original lyrics. Sullivan was so angered by this, he refused to shake hands with the band members and told them they'd never play on his show again. Morrison fired back with, "Who cares, we already did". In 1969, Morrison was cited for indecent exposure at a concert in Miami. In 2007, Florida Governor Charlie Crist suggested the possibility of a posthumous pardon for Morrison, which was announced as successful on Dec. 9, 2010.

Morrison died July 3, 1971, in Paris,  of a probable heroin overdose. This can't be completely confirmed because an autopsy was not performed. He was buried in Paris.

AMBER ALERT: 12-YEAR OLD TEXAS BOY

An Amber Alert has been issued for a 12-year old Houston, Texas boy.

Jonathan Foster was last seen about 1:45 p.m. Friday at the Villa Nueva Apartments, in the 800 block of Oak. He lives there with his mother and stepfather.

The child's date of birth is 11/9/1998. He has short red hair above his ears and an overbite. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a tan shirt with a picture of a guitar, white sneakers with red stripe, and a zip-cup grey hoodie type jacket.

The circumstances of Jonathan’s disappearance are suspicious, according to Sgt. Stuart Harris of HPD’s Missing Persons Unit.

Foster was last seen by his stepfather around 1:45 p.m. Friday. A few minutes later, his mother received a mysterious phone call at work. "Someone called and said it was an emergency," said Gifford. "But by the time she picked up the phone, no one was there."

Jonathan suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder and, according to his grandmother, gets easily confused.

"We’re still trying to get down to exactly what happened and hopefully find him pretty quick," Harris said.
"I don’t know if it’s an abduction," the sergeant said. "I don’t know if he just walked off. I don’t know if there’s foul play involved. We have no reason to think he’s a runaway. …He’s missing under suspicious circumstances, which is always a major concern for us."

Anyone who has seen Jonathan or knows his whereabouts should call HPD at 713-731-5223 or Texas EquuSearch at 281-309-9500 or 911.

Pfizer To Recall One Lot Of Lipitor In The U.S.

Contact:
Pfizer
1-888-LIPITOR

Pfizer has announced that it intends to recall one lot—approximately 19,000 bottles—of Lipitor 40 mg tablets (atorvastatin calcium) distributed in the U.S. The recall stems from one customer report of an uncharacteristic odor related to the bottles in which these lots of Lipitor were packaged. The bottles were supplied by a third-party bottle manufacturer.

A medical assessment found that the risk of health consequences to patients appears to be minimal.
The market action is the result of Pfizer’s increased surveillance of odor-related issues after other reports in the industry. This increased surveillance also led to three earlier recalls of Lipitor, implemented in August, October and November of 2010, in response to infrequent complaints of uncharacteristic odor.

The odor is consistent with the presence of 2, 4, 6 tribromoanisole (TBA), which was found at a very low level in a complaint sample bottle during the investigation leading to the first product recall. Research indicates that a major source of TBA appears to be 2, 4, 6-tribromonophenol (TBP), a chemical used as a wood preservative. Although TBP often is applied to pallets used to transport and store a variety of products, Pfizer prohibits the utilization of TBP-treated wood in the shipment of its medicines.

For the U.S. FDA’s perspective on TBA and health risk, click on the following web site: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/Guidances/ucm192869.htm#59

The company has taken quick action to ensure its product continues to meet the company’s high quality and patient safety standards. We have identified the source of the odor, and we are enacting rigorous measures to prevent odor-related issues going forward. The lot that will be recalled was packaged and shipped before these changes went into effect in August of this year. As previously reported, product filled in bottles made by the supplier prior to those changes may still be on the market, so it is possible that additional recalls could be necessary.

Pfizer has a very rigorous quality and compliance program that includes a highly sensitive surveillance system, which has enabled Pfizer to quickly detect and respond to the odor-related issue. Our market actions reflect the rigor of our quality control system and a commitment to act rapidly and in the best interest of our customers. The well being of patients who take our medicines is our first priority.
Pfizer does not anticipate a product shortage resulting from the recall.

LIPITOR Recall InformationPfizer recalled specific bottles of LIPITOR (40 mg only) due to a small number of reports of an uncharacteristic odor related to the bottles in which LIPITOR is packaged. A medical assessment has determined that the odor is not likely to cause adverse health consequences in patients taking LIPITOR. There is no need to take any action if you take LIPITOR; please continue to take your medication as prescribed by your doctor. However, if you take LIPITOR 40 mg and experience an uncharacteristic odor associated with your medication, please return the tablets to your pharmacist.

Pfizer is committed to the safety of patients who take our medicines. Pfizer is working closely with the bottle supplier to determine the cause of the odor problem and to rapidly address it. Pfizer responded rapidly to ensure LIPITOR continues to meet the company’s high quality standards. We will continue to actively monitor the situation and take any action necessary to ensure patient safety and maintain the quality of our products.
If you have any questions about LIPITOR, please contact your doctor or your pharmacist or call 1-888-LIPITOR.

FDA Recall:Sally Jackson Cheese Recalls All Cheese Because Of Possible Health Risk 12/17/2010

Sally Jackson Cheese of Oroville, WA is recalling all cheese products, including cow, goat, and sheep, because they may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. coli O157:H7). E. coli O157:H7 causes a diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.

Sally Jackson brand cheeses made from raw cow, goat, and sheep milk were distributed nationwide. The cheeses were distributed to restaurants, distributors, and retail stores.

The three types of cheese are all soft raw milk cheeses in various sized pieces. The products do not have labels or codes. The cow and sheep milk cheeses are wrapped in chestnut leaves, the goat cheese is wrapped in grape leaves and all are secured with twine. The cheeses may have an outer wrapping of waxed paper.
The products have been identified as a possible source of E. coli infections currently under investigation.

The problem was revealed as a result of follow-up by the FDA of a report of an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections. The notification came from the Washington State Department of Agriculture, Washington Department of Health, and the Oregon Public Health Division.

Customers who have purchased Sally Jackson cheeses are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 509-429-3057, Monday through Friday, between 8:00am and 5:00pm Pacific Time.

Gone Before Their Time - Janis Joplin

This is the fifth in a series of articles memorializing musicians who died before their time:

Janis Lyn Joplin, January 19, 1943 - October 4, 1970, is an American rock icon. She was a singer, composer and music arranger. She was first recognized as the lead singer for Big Brother & the Holding Company. She left the group and started the backup group Kozmic Blues Band. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004. In 2008, Rolling Stone ranked her 28th of 100 greatest singers of all time.

Janis was born in Port Arthur, Texas. Her parents were Seth and Dorothy Joplin. She had a younger brother and sister, Michael and Laura. Janis sang in the local choir and focused her music interest towards the blues by listening to artists like Bessie Smith and Leadbelly.

Janis graduated from high school in 1960 and attended Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont, Texas. Later she attended later the University of Texas at Austin.

Janis became addicted to heroin. In 1970 she formed the Full Tilt Boogie Band. The band performed with artists like the Grateful Dead, Delaney and Bonnie, Rick Danko and The Band, Eric Andersen and Ian and Sylvia.

Two of her best albums, in my opinion, were "Cheap Thrills" and "Pearl". A few of my favorite songs are "Piece Of My Heart", "Bye, Bye Baby", and "Me and Bobby McGee".

Janis Joplin died at the young age of 27 on October 4, 1970. The official cause of death was an overdose of heroin.
